A Simple Model for the Distribution of Quiet Sun Magnetic Field Strengths
نویسنده
چکیده
We derive a first order linear differential equation describing the shape of the probability density function of magnetic field strengths in the quiet Sun (PDF). The modeling is very schematic. It considers convective motions which continuously supply and withdraw magnetic structures. In addition, a magnetic amplification mechanism increases the field strength up to a threshold that cannot be exceeded. These three basic ingredients provide PDFs in good agreement with the PDFs produced by realistic numerical simulations of magneto convection, as well as with quiet Sun PDFs inferred from observations. In particular, the distribution is approximately lognormal, and it produces an excess of magnetic fields (i.e., a hump in the distribution) right before the maximum field strength. The success of this simple model may indicate that only a few basic ingredients shape the quiet Sun PDF. Our approach provides a concise parametric representation of the PDF, as required to develop automatic methods of diagnostics. Subject headings: convection – Sun: magnetic fields – Sun: photosphere

Proper integration time of polarization signals of internetwork regions using Sunrise/IMaX data
Distribution of magnetic fields in the quiet-Sun internetwork areas has been affected by weak polarization (in particular Stokes Q and U) signals. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the weak polarization signals, several approaches, including temporal integrations, have been proposed in the literature. In this study, we aim to investigate a proper temporal-integration time with which...

Context. The quiet Sun presents magnetized plasma whose field strengths vary from zero to about 2 kG. The probability density function of the magnetic field strength B efficaciously describes the statistical properties of the quiet Sun magnetic field. Aims. We simulate the dynamics and the evolution of quiet Sun magnetic elements to produce a probability density function of the field strengths ...

The Hanle depolarization signals of Sr λ4607 Å have been used to estimate the unsigned magnetic flux and magnetic energy existing in the quiet Sun photosphere. However, the Sr λ4607 Å Hanle signals are not sensitive to the unsigned flux and energy. They only bear information on the fraction of photosphere occupied by magnetic field strengths smaller than the Hanle saturation, which do not c...
متن کاملQuiet Sun Magnetic Field Measurements Based on Lines with Hyperfine Structure
The Zeeman pattern of Mn I lines is sensitive to hyperfine structure (HFS) and, because of this reason, they respond to hG magnetic field strengths differently from the lines commonly used in solar magnetometry. This peculiarity has been employed to measure magnetic field strengths in quiet Sun regions. However, the methods applied so far assume the magnetic field to be constant in the resoluti...
